About This Blog

*Said Simmons:  The following was stolen ... er, borrowed ... from a random climate science blog and I thought it would make for a awkward, yet fun manner to describe this blog.

What’s the blog about?
Sports and pop culture.  And a lot of other subjects that end up my cursor's crosshair.

Who’s it for?
People interested in my (lacking) wit and humor, and lost internet souls Google sends my direction.  I tend to write about local sports, television and events relevant to Atlanta, Ga., or anything that piques my interest.  Since NASCAR is my day job, I probably won't share many opinions on the subject -- but might include a photo or piece I write for work along the way.

What does the author think about Science Sports and Pop Culture?
Sports is a religion.  Pop culture is not.  However, counter culture is -- and is much cooler.

The rest of this is verbatim from the science blog, but yep, completely agree.

"It’s good to ask questions.

Being skeptical is a positive thing.

When people of an alternative viewpoint use catchy but insulting labels for you, keep asking questions and thinking for yourself. Science isn’t Sports and culture aren't settled by being able to come up with the best insults, although it can be a lot of fun – even for grown ups."

What does the author think about Climate Science Atlanta sports?
It's a painful, self-loathing existence, but at least we aren't Cleveland.

A little more specific?
Cleveland sports teams are regularly moribund -- at least Atlanta's teams are competitive -- plus it's Cleveland, where the weather sucks ... oh, you meant about Atlanta ...

If you're an Atlanta sports fan, you're used to having competitive teams that find some method to choke.  Sure, they're decent enough top warrant respect (sorry, Cleveland), but they always find a way to fall short of any meaningful glory.  Because of this, we're consistently ignored by the national media, and oft disrespected and treated liked a child eating with the adults.  (For example, see media coverage of the Falcons campaign in 2012.)

A personal tale: after camping overnight, my father was the first fan to purchase Falcons playoff tickets in 1978.  He is yet to see a Falcons championship.  I grew up in the era of the Worst-to-First Braves, Bobby Cox's boys with the best pitching staff in MLB history, yet we only won one title.  The Atlanta Hawks could capture the attention of ATL with a title, yet only came closest with 'The Human Highlight Reel' in the '80s.  And the Thrashers ... pour one out for the homies.

Actually, 'Awesome Bill from Dawsonville' might be the most successful 'franchise' in Atlanta sports, but his career strangely mirrored that of the '90s Braves.  One championship, widely popular, lots of wins and the elephant in the room -- why the hell didn't each win more titles?

Atlanta is most certainly not titletown: Valdosta, Ga. is -- deal with it Packer fans.

Opinions
Again, from the science folks:  "Opinions are often interesting and sometimes entertaining."  Yep.  I have them and will share them from time to time. Please share yours. I'll also try to present some straight news from time to time.

Anything else?
I figure you might want to know about me ...

My name is Matthew Simmons and I am a motorsports PR representative, journalist and a (terrible) aspiring fiction writer.  I'm still a young dude, but have nearly 10 years experience in both journalism and public relations.  My background includes representing a number of clients -- an auto manufacturer, collegiate athletics program, racing team and sports facility -- and have worked in both print and radio roles.  I still like to fancy myself a writer, but my CV suggests I'm a PR rep by trade.

I started this blog for a trio of reasons -- to scratch a creative itch, enhance my online presence, and to learn very basic HTML code, which will hopefully foster a further interest in coding.
